A house is full of walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams.” This anonymous quote eloquently denotes the importance of “home”. Growing older is a journey that brings about physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Therapists are uniquely qualified to address each of these areas, when granted the opportunity, and privilege, to assess a client’s home. This course utilizes the Person-Environment-Occupation Model as a framework to evaluate your patient’s physical environment and how they “live” in it. You will be challenged to elevate your skills from simply measuring doorways and thresholds, to taking a wholistic look into the life of your older client. Persons 65 years of age and older are the fastest growing age group in the country. Eighty-nine percent of older Americans want to remain in their home and community for as long as possible (AARP Home Fit Guide). If you are working with older adults who are planning to remain in/return to their home, don’t just do a Home Eval, perform a Functional Home Evaluation. This course will enable you, the clinician, to competently combine evidence-based assessments of your client, and thorough assessment of their domicile, to make personalized recommendations that will empower your older clients to age in place.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
