Improving Thoracic Kyphosis: Prevention and Treatment of Vertebral Fractures in Patients with Osteoporosis

December 6, 2025 – 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST

Learn how to reduce your patient’s thoracic kyphosis and treat patients with vertebral fractures based on the best evidence.  Keeping current with the latest research to guide evidence-based practice is especially important when working with the osteoporotic patient.   We will discuss new information on loading the spine appropriately to prevent further loss of bone density which is imperative for the patient with osteoporosis. Inactivity and protective behaviors are disastrous for the older adult with previous fractures, declining balance, bone and muscle strength.  Rehabilitation practitioners are in the prime position to guide the patient with vertebral compression fractures toward safe and effective exercise.   You will come away from the course with the best exercises to include in your patient’s exercise program at their next treatment session!

Research on exercise for reduction of kyphosis and fracture prevention –1 hour

Treatments and manual therapy for patients with vertebral fractures – .25 hours

Exercise strength progressions for the frail older adult with thoracic kyphosis or vertebral fracture – .5 hours

Safely loading the spine with osteoporosis or previous vertebral fracture  – .75 hours

Review and Q&A – .5 hour

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the latest research on treatment and exercise for thoracic kyphosis or vertebral fracture.
  2. Apply the best treatment approach for reducing thoracic kyphosis.
  3. Prescribe the appropriate levels of strength progressions to load the spine safely to prevent vertebral bone loss.
  4. Perform and teach the 5 best exercises to incorporate in the kyphotic or osteoporotic patient’s program.
