Acute Care for the Older Adult: Essentials for PT

September 14, 2024 – 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST

This course provides a comprehensive overview and systematic process for critical thinking for safe and effective management of the older adult across the acute care setting.  Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of aging changes that should be considered for each patient in acute care regardless of medical presentation and how aging intersects with common medical patient presentations in acute care.  This interactive course will assist the participant in learning through interactive case studies and discussion on how current acute care and older adult research findings aid the clinician in successful patient management.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe important principles of care of the older adult are part of their acute care examination.
  • Analyze evidence based older adult treatment consistent with current literature and appropriate for the acute care setting.
  • Design treatment programs for older adults in the acute care setting.
  • Develop a plan to optimize health span for older adults in their care through advocacy and interprofessional collaboration.
  • Optimize safe discharge planning for older adults in the acute care setting.

Four sections: Each of the four sections will be 45-minute presentation, 15-minute case and then 10-15 minutes for q and a.

  • (1.25 hours) Older adult essentials (aging changes that should be considered for each patient in acute care regardless of medical presentation. Whole patient assessment- focusing on key areas: falls, pain, function. (Review of classic literature infused such as walking speed). Specifics of aging that intersect with common medical presentations.

  • (1.25 hours) Putting evidence into practice– review of acute care research in older adults and implications for practice. (Highlight examples of impact in acute care practice and models of implementing the knowledge gained into practice.)
    • Interactive case to review
  • (1.25 hours) Optimizing healthspan of older adults when in care in the acute care setting.
    • Communication and advocacy for older adults-patient empowerment, health disparities, functional wellness check
    • Care management, discharge decision making, interprofessional collaboration
    • Interactive case to review
  • (1.25 hours) Setting patients up for success post-acute care– SNF and Rehab, for home and outpatient
    • Optimizing safe and effective intervention in acute care for next level of service
    • Value based acute care physical therapy for older adults
    • Case examples

Interactive cases will be cases that either evolve through the module or are presented for discussion and thoughts at the end of each module.

EDUCATIONAL CREDIT: A certificate of attendance for 5 contact hours of educational activity (5 CEUs or 0.5 CEUs depending on how your Practice Act determines CEUs in your state) will be awarded to registrants upon completion of the Live Webinar.

Course Format: Live Webinar

Refund Policy: Cancellations must be received in writing at least two weeks prior to the seminar date for tuition refund less a $25 administration fee. NO refunds will be made after this date or if any of the course materials are downloaded.

Criteria for Completion:

A post-test will be given at the end of the Webinar. A post-test score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved. You will receive a certificate of completion for 3 contact hours.
