Demolishing Deconditioning

We are crucial to our patient’s recovery

Deconditioning has a particularly deleterious effect on our older population who may already be dealing with such issues as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and even reduced mobility. Not only does the inactivity have grave consequences on the human body, but the social isolation contributes to a loss of cognitive function as well as a compromised emotional wellbeing.

Rehabilitation professionals can help their patients become more active and mitigate the consequences of inactivity and social isolation. We are in a prime position to impact the health and wellbeing of our patients. Now, more than ever, we need to carefully analyze each patient’s situation, provide evidence-based care, and convince our patients to embrace long term changes of behavior that incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

This course will share information that will enable you to do all of this in any setting: chose the most effective EBM tools, interventions, and easy to administer methods of enhancing physical activity. Build your skills as you learn research-based tools and techniques to successfully address deconditioning with your older patients.

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to

  1. Discuss the importance of physical activity for older adults
  2. Perform at least 5 evidence-based evaluation tools
  3. Prescribe sustainable physical activity programs
  4. Compare and contrast motivational and behavioral interventions for sustaining physical activity
