We know exercise is key for fall prevention and wellness for older adults. Physical therapists have the skills and passion to lead such programs in our communities. Even virtually, there is substantial evidence supporting virtual group exercise for” under-active older adults”. We can help folks come back from illnesses, and hospitalizations, by helping them integrate exercise into their daily lives. But how often do patients leave their PT outpatient, inpatient, SNF or hospital setting with a list of exercises that are meant to help maintain PT goals and prevent further frailty? Sadly, the evidence shows these efforts are not effective — Even with pictures and photos!
Dr. Susan Musicant will show you how to help “under-active older adults”, frequently very fearful of falling, perhaps recently discharged from your PT program into an active ongoing exercise routine from their homes. You can create community, lessen isolation and depression — and educate about the how and why to establish an ongoing exercise program even virtually. Learn how to use music, breathing exercises, a positive social environment to “do the impossible”. Get “under- active older folks” off the couch!
