Not Just Surviving but Thriving: Rehabilitation and Cancer


Survival rates for cancer are approaching 70%. That means that the majority of people treated for cancer will survive. The bad news is that more than 60% of those survivors experience functional impairments that prohibit them from completing their daily activities and nearly 1/3 suffer chronic disability. It doesn’t have to be that way! Cancer treatments and their side effects negatively impact function, but rehabilitation interventions can significantly alter this trajectory of functional decline. In fact, most individuals receiving rehabilitation during and after treatment recover their full function. This course will provide you with an understanding of common cancer disease treatments and their side effects, we will review prevalent functional impairments associated with the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and will identify evidence-based interventions that should be included in a rehabilitation plan of care. Case studies will be presented throughout to review differential diagnosis, assessment, and intervention strategies.

Introduction to Cancer Treatments, Their Side Effects, and the Functional Impact  – A system-based approach to screening and assessing cancer treatment-related impairments (1.5 hour)

Evidence Based Interventions for Cancer Treatment-Related Morbidity– When do we engage with rehabilitation and what is the evidence (1.5 hour)

Case-Based Approach to Assessment and Care Planning– Interactive session to review cases and collaborate on differential diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment planning. (1 hour)

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the most common types of cancer treatments, their side effects, and impact on function.
  2. Appreciate common impairments that frequently develop due to cancer or cancer treatment and their impact on short and long term function.
  3. Differentiate the components of a cancer rehabilitation program including screening, triage, and functional measurement tools.
  4. Apply evidence to support cancer rehabilitation clinical interventions in various care settings with specific focus on published guidelines.
  5. Design an appropriate exercise program with consideration for disease status, anticipated side effects of cancer treatment, and patient preferences, in the context of an individual’s physical needs and with consideration for safety.
  6. Identify the unique role that the rehabilitation provider plays on the cancer care team regarding care planning throughout the lifespan

You will be able to see, hear and listen to the course presenter.  This type of webinar will utilize previously recoreded instruction, demonstrative videos, power point slides and more. You will not have the opportunity to ask questions during the seminar as it is recorded. A comprehensive handout will be made available to you after you register for the webinar. The written content used in the presentation will also be made available to you for your personal use (Power Point Slides, Reference Materials etc.).
