Our Next Phase in Total Joint Arthroplasty: Balance, Coordination, Flexibility and Strength

July 20, 2024 - 12:00pm-3:00pm EST

As a surgical treatment strategy for end-stage arthritis, total joint arthroplasty is a highly valuable option for millions of adults.  There are drivers that are shifting the post-operative rehabilitation process to use of telehealth and non-skilled interventions.   Physical therapy’s role as movement experts is vital to evaluate and anticipate flexibility, balance, coordination and strength to minimize future deficits.  This course specifically highlights the treatment strategies beyond exercises in each level of care. We address evidence-based practice, recovery timing, and coordination deficits. We encourage clinicians to bring their own case questions to discuss and problem solve.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare surgical strategies and medical management of arthritis through joint arthroplasty surgery.
  2.   Appraise selection criteria and rationale for patients in inpatient and outpatient surgery locations.
  3. Analyze factors leading to functional deficits and contributing to potential problems with balance, coordination and falls.
  4. Defend treatment strategies to optimize physical performance and correct deficits.
  5.    Develop treatment protocols for short term and long-term functional goals.
