As of 2023, more than 650 million people throughout the world have had COVID-19. While most people recover in a matter of days to a few weeks, some people develop post-acute sequelae of SARS CoV-2 infection (PASC), commonly referred to as Long COVID which is when symptoms persist past the typical time for them to resolve. Common symptoms include dyspnea, exercise intolerance, fatigue, and cognitive and mental health changes. The risk of PASC increases with age and is exacerbated by the presence of comorbidities. In some older adults, PASC appears to cause existing chronic conditions worse with a negative impact on their function, activities and participation, and quality of life. Rehabilitation is a key component of the management of PASC in aging adults. Thorough initial assessment and ongoing monitoring of the patient with PASC is crucial to develop and deliver appropriate interventions that will promote functional improvement while minimizing symptom exacerbation. This course will review current research on PASC with an emphasis on its effects on the older population. Screening and assessment tools for common PASC related conditions will be discussed. Rehabilitation strategies and interventions for older adults with PASC will be presented.
