Evidence-based Strategies to Mitigate Age-related Sarcopenia


One of the most significant changes associated with aging is the loss of muscle size, strength, and power which can have a detrimental effect on function in older adults increasing their risk of falls, impaired mobility, and loss of independence. This course covers the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and presents current evidence-informed approaches to its prevention and treatment with an emphasis on exercise along with other appropriate interventions currently being investigated.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to

  1. Describe aging effects on the musculoskeletal system.
  2. Discuss the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and
  3. Compare and contrast sarcopenia and dynapenia.
  4. Identify the relationship of sarcopenia and dynapenia to other conditions commonly seen in older adults.
  5. Select sarcopenia screening tools for use in a clinical or home setting.
  6. Discuss the role of nutrition, pharmacology, blood flow restriction and whole body vibration as interventions for sarcopenia.
  7. Determine appropriate exercise and activity interventions to prevent and treat sarcopenia in older adults.

Upon completion of the course, a certificate of completion for 3 contact hours of educational credit will be awarded.
