The Best Exercises for Building Bone: A practical Update on Osteoporosis Exercise Research

August 22, 2026

Keeping current with the latest research to guide evidence-based practice is especially important when working with the osteoporotic patient.   Inactivity and protective behaviors are disastrous for the older adult with previous fractures, declining balance, bone and muscle strength.  Rehabilitation practitioners are in the prime position to guide the patient with low bone density toward effective and safe exercise recommendations.  This course provides a summary of the highest quality trials comparing high intensity and low intensity exercise and high impact vs. low impact randomized controlled trials.   A number of recently published systematic review papers will be discussed that provide clear guidance on the type of exercise that is most effective for improving bone density.  Discover how the mindbody approach to the exercises systems of yoga or Pilates can benefit body awareness, alignment and control.  Discuss the latest trials on vibration, aquatics, cycling and endurance activities and learn which activities may be detrimental to bone health.   You will come away from the course with the best exercises to include in your patient’s exercise program at their next treatment session!
