Dr. Kuei-Min Chen is a maverick in the field of rehabilitation for weaker older adults and is world renowned for her creativity and research in bringing evidence based programs that have been proven to improve strength, function and cardiorespitory benefits while seated. She has pioneered and perfected programs for this underserved population all over the world. For the first time she is sharing two of her most famous programs in this online course in the United States. Two specific examples of innovative rehabilitation programs for weaker older adults, namely the Vitality Acupunch (VA) exercise program and the Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band (WSEB) exercise program, will be discussed and demonstrated. This course will introduce the overall structure of complementary alternative therapies and their evidence-based effects. In addition, The theoretical basis, features, and principles of the programs will be explained, and the full program protocols will be demonstrated with Dr. Chen leading the exercises and older adults doing these two programs. In addition, Dr. Carole Lewis will be discussing the health benefits as well as Dr. Chen’s world view of health care for weaker older adults.

·       Theoretical basis and special characteristics of the Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band (WSEB) exercise program.
·       Two levels (basic vs. advanced), 3 phases, and 18 motions of the Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band (WSEB) exercise program protocol.
·       Evidence-based benefits of elastic band exercise.
·       Precautions of practicing elastic band exercise.

By the time the participants finish the course, they should be able to:

  2. Justify the evidence-based benefits of acupunch exercise and elastic band exercise.

  4. Master the Vitality Acupunch (VA) exercise program.
  5. Master the Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band (WSEB) exercise program.

Upon completion of the course, a certificate of completion for 5 contact hours of educational credit will be awarded.
